I'm reading The dream of perpetual motion for the second time and I must say it is the absolute greatest novel I have ever read.
Thank you so much, I can't wait for more of your work.

I didn't notice that Frayn's beard changes its appearance--I'll watch for that next time. It's a case where what could be a continuity error could also be a matter of forethought--that is, it's deliberately calling attention to its falseness.

Interesting that Zardoz might be more openly satiric than people give it credit for. That reminds me of the reviews of Starship Troopers (the Verhoeven movie, not the book) when it came out--many people reviewed it as if it wasn't a satire, which is a grave misreading (whatever else one might think of that movie).

Yes--I use a plain old Parker ballpoint. (Though I use Moleskine notebooks, in a concession to luxury and acid-freeness and such.)

Hi, good catch with the hairlessness and the drawn-on beard!
Note also that Arthur Frayn's beard is actually different in different parts of the film (three lines at the start, one at the end)!

Also, Danny Peary's (negative) review mentioned that Boorman said in an interview that he had stayed in some hippie communes prior to making the film and he had found them to be very cold. I think the film is making fun of them: the voting on everything, discussing/analyzing things to death etc. etc.
All discussions about Zardoz seem to miss this (there's also a lot of British humour which I'm not sure everybody understands).

I am happy to hear you say this. The writing everyday model has always seemed a bit draconian and misguided to me, as thinking and wandering around observing and thinking some more, helps work out structure in ways that writing on the page may actually obstruct. It seems a quantity over quality philosophy at best, and also unrealistic for most of us. Lastly, you write with a pen?

Thanks Dexter for the response. I did see The Fall and was simply amazed. I will be sure to check out Monae and Mann's work. Nothing wrong with a six-week read - a good vacation!

Cheers Dexter!
